Getting Your Home Ready to Sell #3: Backyard Basics
So the initial impression was good and the landscaping is in check. Let’s stay outside a moment and talk about one of your home’s biggest selling points: The Backyard!!!
The backyard is where a LOT of entertaining goes on, and as such it is important that potential buyers can see themselves relaxing and hosting guests in the backyard. Here is what you can do to ensure that you backyard is an eye-catcher and not a liability.
Keep it Clean
The backyard should be given the same treatment that the front yard got in the initial impression phase. Clean and de-clutter at the very least, have a professional service come and give the landscaping and backyard a once over to make sure it is in good shape and remove things like the dog house and any kids toys. You really don’t have to go to crazy, people want to be able to envision the parties they are going to throw out here. Even if you backyard isn’t amazing, a clean, simple space is a huge selling point; a blank canvas if you will.
Add Some Plants and Color
Once you have gotten the backyard clean and into a state of basic readiness, you can add a few plants and a bit of color. This small added touch can really make the backyard space even that much more appealing.
As we mentioned last time, if you want to really knock it out of the park, use native plants and do as much xeriscaping as possible. These will help your home stand out while blending in and the low maintenance landscaping will be a big selling point for many buyers.
Clean the Grill
If you have a BBQ or BBQ area, make sure it is clean inside and out. A dirty BBQ grill is one of the most off-putting things potential sellers can see. Unless it is a permanent installation, you will most likely be taking it with you when you leave, but the impression it leaves on buyers is HUGE.
Get the Pool Dialed In
If your yard has a pool or spa, it needs to be professionally cleaned and spotless. The only thing you want any potential buyers to seen in the pool/spa is themselves relaxing after a long day.
